What are we looking for?
Each year we look for workshops that are unique, informative, fun, and educational. If you have presented the same material at the conference in past years we are more likely going to look for another workshop that may address similar issues. So we're asking you to be innovative and mix it up a bit.
We have three categories of workshops.
The adult sessions are intended to be lectures or discussions that are informative and supportive to the homeschooling journey. They can have a specific focus with an educational topic (such as Creative Writing), with a homeschooling style (such as Waldorf Methods), or they can be topics intended to support most any homeschooler.
The family sessions are open to all ages, and the focus is on fun and learning while doing. These workshops are a great way to introduce and share your interest or hobby to other homeschoolers. They can be craft projects, puzzles and games, poetry writing -- it's up to your imagination. We anticipate that they will be interactive and hands on workshops.
The teen sessions are for our teens, and can be a combination of all of the above. If you believe you have something the teens will be interested in, let us know. Decisions regarding teen workshops are made by the teen conference committee.
Submitting a Proposal
First, you will need to enter your personal information as a presenter, then you can enter workshop session proposals.
In order to help us plan another fabulous conference, please fill out our forms completely. If you are asked to speak at the conference, your form information will be used for the website and printed program, so please take the time to fill it out entirely. It will be helpful to have all of your information ready before you fill out our forms. Below is a description of the information we ask for.
Not all proposals will be chosen for the conference. We have a limited amount of space and budget, so we will contact you by March 20th, 2010 to let you know if we do wish to have you present your workshop.
Important Note: Although the CHS newsletter states that we will offer stipends for workshops, at this time we can only guarantee to offer you some discount on your registration fee. If we are able to offer you any thing more, we will let you know when we contact you about your proposal acceptance.
Personal Information
- Your contact and address information
- Info about your HSC Conference experience
- A Bio for our website and publication
- This information will be printed directly in the Conference Program, so please be sure it is grammatically correct, proof-read, and ready to be printed for the conference attendees. It is helpful to keep your bio brief and yet informative.
Session Information
- Your email address needs to be the same as the one you used for your personal info
- Audience: We need to know if it will be an Adult, Family, or Teen session.
An Adult session is designed mainly for parents, although it is not restricted to Adult participation. The focus of the workshop is on talks and discussions rather than hands-on activities. Topics related to specific homeschooling styles, learning styles, parenting and family issues are just a few of the ideas that work well for an Adult session.
Our Family Program is accepting proposals for hands-on type workshops such as crafts, drama, dance, music, science, martial arts, and more. Please be specific in your description with regards to the following information:
- Who would enjoy this workshop?
- What skills are needed (if any)?
- What exactly will be happening in this workshop (details!)
- Is there anyone who would not particularly enjoy this workshop?
- Is it inappropriate for anyone in particular?
Our Teen Conference Committee is accepting proposals for workshops that would appeal specifically to teens. These can be hands-on type sessions or discussions, we're open to suggestions! Please be detailed in your proposal and use wording that will appeal to teens.
- A session title and description
- This information will be used to review the proposals, so please clearly describe your session here. If the proposal is accepted, this information will also be printed directly in the Conference Program, so please be sure it is grammatically correct, proof-read, and ready to be printed for the conference attendees. It is helpful to keep the description brief and yet informative.
- Any photocopy and/or supply needs
- We need to have this information identified and quantified before we can consider your workshop. Please think through your workshop idea, present it to a friend, imagine who will be there and what materials you will need. Will you need scissors and pencils and glue?
Perhaps your attendees should bring their laptops. Maybe it would be helpful to have some paper and pencils so your attendees can write if you are offering a Creative Writing workshop. Or, maybe you are going to offer a Yarn Doll Making workshop and will need to purchase yarn.
Be as complete as you can, and price out the costs for us before hand. HSC already has most of the items that get used over and over (like scissors, pencils, pens, glue), but we'd like you to help us budget the cost of the consumable items (the ones that get used up during the workshop - like watercolor paper, paint, items specific to your particular workshop.)
- The space you need for your workshop
- We have certain physical layouts for the conference rooms, please choose one of these that will best suite your workshop
- Audio/Visual needs
- If you will need an LCD projector, you will be expected to provide your own.
- Special Notes
- Use this section to have more of a conversation with us about any thoughts or special requirements you may have, such as scheduling issues.
Once you complete and submit the form you will receive an email copy as a confirmation.
